CHOOSING THE PERFECT SIZE AND SHAPE RUG
Area rugs and runners are a great way to help define a space in areas such as the bedroom, lounge, entrance, hallway and dining room. Here, we aim to help you determine the perfect size dimension for your space, relative to your furnishings and then we'll make it to your exact measurements for a perfect fit.
THE LIVING ROOM RUG #1
Go big! This option allows your rug to encompass all your seating, so it anchors your living room and provides a space for connection. Lay out all your main living furniture – then add at least 20cm beyond each piece for your rug to extend. Stop shy of the entertainment unit as this doesn’t need to sit on the rug.THE LIVING ROOM RUG #2
Avoid opting for smaller rugs as this will make your overall room feel small. This option allows your furniture to be half-on, half-off the rug. So at least the front legs of your chairs or sofa sit on the rug.
THE DINING ROOM RUG
Use your dining table size as a guide and follow the proportions. Choose a rug that extends at least 90cm beyond all sides of your table – big enough so when chairs are pushed back, they stay on the rug. This also helps protect hard flooring and minimises trip hazards.
Have a round dining table? Choose a round rug to create cohesion and echo similar shapes in your dining area. Have an extendable table? Choose a size that will still fit beneath your table when it’s fully extended.
THE BEDROOM RUG #1
Placed under your bed, a wool rug offers softness underfoot when climbing in and out of bed. Start your rug around 50cm off the wall at the head of your bed (depending on your bed and room size). This means your rug will sit underneath the lower two thirds of your bed and stretch out beyond the foot of the bed.
Opt for symmetry so your rug extends equally on the sides and foot end of your bed by at least 50cm. This makes your rug feel in proportion with the room.
THE BEDROOM RUG #2
Start your rug at the head of your bed so it's touching the wall. This means your bedside tables will sit on the rug.
Opt for symmetry so your rug extends equally on the sides and foot end of your bed by at least 50cm (depending on the size of your bed and room). This makes your rug feel in proportion with the room.
THE HALLWAY RUNNER
For entranceways, a beautiful wool rug can set the tone by adding immediate visual impact and defining the way into your home.
Hallways rugs can also help dampen acoustics and minimise footstep noise by softening your hard flooring.
Standard hallway runners are usually around 80-100cm wide. Centre it in your hallway with equal flooring showing on either side and furniture flanking not on the runner. Play with the length depending on the size of your entranceway or hallway.
